Depot Plug-in Charger

Conductive Depot Charging (Plug-In)

Depot Charger Power Interface: Each bus is charged overnight (taking advantage of lower, off peak energy rates) via standard 480V/3Phase/100Amp AC power and BYD’s 80 kW AC power interface. There are two charging couplers per power interface that connect to two power receptacles built into the bus.

Depot Charger Power Receptacle: Each power receptacle is rated for 40 kW for a total of 80 kW energy transfer with both couplers connected. Charging with both couplers takes up to four hours to fully charge the bus from 0% state of charge (SOC) to 100% SOC.

Rear Axle Assembly

Electric-Driven Rear Axle / In-Hub Motors

BYD buses are powered by a battery-electric propulsion system made possible by an electric-driven rear axle with two liquid cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet motors. The in-hub motors use neodymium rare earth magnets that provide additional power density and a rated load efficiency of approximately 94 percent. The rear-drive axle system eliminates costly gearboxes, transmissions, and the drive shaft and requires no differential mechanism. The power from the motor is directly transmitted to the wheels, improving efficiency and reducing noise and vibration. The buses are designed so that if one of the traction motors is completely damaged, a bus can still operate with the remaining motor.

Secondary Charging Disk

On-Route Charger Secondary Pad

The secondary pad or receiver consists of a secondary charging disk and management module. The management module contains charge control and interface electronics for communications and control to the vehicle. When aligned with the primary pad in the pavement, energy is transferred at 50 kW through an air gap and converted into DC power.

Energy Storage System (ESS) Pack 2

BYD buses utilize a lithium iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) energy storage system. LiFePO4 batteries are environmentally safe and have a long service life. After 12 years of use, the battery capacity is projected to remain above 80%. As a result, BYD offers the industry’s longest battery warranty of twelve years with no required mid-life battery replacement. As battery cells age and degrade below 70% of original capacity, they can no longer be used in transit applications. At that time, cells, modules, or packs can be removed and replaced. Removed cells, modules, or packs can be reused in stationary energy storage applications or can be safely recycled.

Primary Pad & Power Module

On-Route Charger Primary Pad:

The primary pad or transmitter is an induction coil embedded in the pavement. The primary pad transmits energy from the PPM to the secondary pad on the bus.

Motor Controllers

Motor Controllers / Bi-Directional Inverters

Two motor controllers/bi-directional inverters monitor and process inputs and control the operation of all propulsion system components. BYD has designed these controllers to work in ambient temperatures between -40F and 185F. Each controller has bi-directional power control for charging and discharging, meaning that the bus has the capability of providing vehicle to grid power of 240V AC at 60 kW. It can further offer vehicle to load capabilities to shop tools with power between 10 and 15 kW of power.
